Although many electronic gadgets have very short shelf lives, the iPad isn't aging, according to the CEO of Apple. Indeed, Steve Jobs seems to think the release of an updated mobile operating system, iOS 4.2, will effectively give the tablet computer a fresh start.

Jobs explained in a statement, "iOS 4.2 makes the iPad a completely new product, just in time for the holiday season. Once again, the iPad with iOS 4.2 will define the target that other tablets will aspire to, but very few, if any, will ever be able to hit."

And whether you believe Apple's CEO or not, iOS 4.2 does introduce a lot of new features. Some of the most noteworthy ones are called AirPlay, AirPrint, Folders, Game Center, Multitasking, and Unified Inbox, and they'd be an impressive enough collection on their own.

The new features are supposed to total over 100, however, which means plenty more aspects of the iPad have also undergone a thorough reworking.

iOS 4.2 became available this week, so it shouldn't be too long before we hear what sort of effect it has on sales figures. Perhaps the whole tablet PC industry will get a boost, too, if talk concerning the iPad causes a few people to think about competing devices.

Anyway, Apple wanted everyone to know, "[C]ustomers have downloaded more than seven billion apps from the groundbreaking App Store and more than 300,000 apps are available to consumers in 90 countries, with more than 40,000 native iPad apps."
