Whether you feel the iPad has revitalized the tablet PC market or given Apple an undeserved near-monopoly, it's looking like a second device will soon come along to have even more of an effect. Reports indicate a smaller iPad will launch in time for the 2010 holiday season.
Nothing's been confirmed yet, so this might not qualify as more than a rumor. Dan Nystedt recently explained that the evidence is convincing, though.
"This is the second report of an iPad 2 sighting in Taiwan," he pointed out, "and it comes from the island's Chinese-language Economic Daily News financial newspaper, which was among the first to correctly report that Apple was making a tablet when other news sources said it would be a netbook."
Furthermore, "The Economic Daily reports that Taiwanese companies have won a number of component contracts for the iPad 2. Chimei Innolux will supply 7-inch LCD screens . . . . Touchscreen technology for the screens will come from Cando Corporation . . . . Apple has also tapped Compal Electronics, one of the world's largest contract laptop computer makers, to assemble the new iPad."
It's hard to ask for a more complete picture of the product than that.
The only thing left, then, is to receive official confirmation, and we're hoping to get that sooner rather than later as marketing efforts begin.
