03.09.10 HP Slate Hits It Big With Latest Demonstrations By John VinsonIt's a bit early to tell for sure, but 2010 looks to be shaping up as the year of the Tablet PC. Along with the rampant rumors of Microsoft Courier and the hype surrounding the Apple iPad, we have a new device added to the mix - the HP Slate. Whenever similar devices hit the market, it's instinctive that we pit them against one another. Who's going to sell more units? Which device is going to have the longevity to sell after the first month? Which device will be the best deal for the consumer? Unfortunately, there are very few answers thus far about any of the devices. The most we know about is the iPad which comes out April 3rd. The Microsoft Courier we still know almost nothing about; only leaked screenshots and videos are available at this time. As for the Apple iPad and HP Slate, we can start drawing comparisons and seeing what each device has to offer in terms of specs and features. Here's a list of each device, and what we know so far: Apple iPad Display: 9.7 - inch LED multi-touch Hard Drive Capacity: 16GB, 32GB, 64GB Processor: 1GHz Apple A4 WiFi (802.11 a/b/g/n) Bluetooth 2.1 iTunes/App Store/iBooks Support Pricing: 16GB - $499 ($629 3G), 32GB - $599 ($729 3G), 64GB - $699 ($829 3G) 10 Hours Battery Life Release Date: April 3rd, 2010 HP Slate Display: 10 inch - multi-touch Hard Drive Capacity: Unknown Processor: Unknown (speculated as either a Atom or Core processor) Windows 7 Support Adobe Flash/Air Support Pricing: Unknown Battery Life: Unknown Release Date: Coming in 2010 Obviously, we know more about the Apple iPad at this point. Though, HP has released a brand new commercial, along with a demo of the HP Slate in action. The strength of the HP Slate will rest upon its compatibility with Windows 7, and integration of Flash and Air. One of the huge knocks against the iPad is lack of Flash support, which many applications across the internet use for video, and interactive content. We're learning about these Tablet PCs one piece of information at a time. Hopefully, as the year draws on we'll be better suited to make comparisons. For the extremely conscious consumer, you might want to be patient and wait for all three of the Tablet devices to release before making a final decision. For those who are huge Apple fans, this might be easier said than done. About the Author: John is a staff writer for WebProNews. |
