12.09.09 The JooJoo Tablet PC Releasing Under Heavy Scrutiny By John VinsonThe tablet PC, JooJoo which has all kinds of potential from a technical aspect, could release with loads of controversy. Michael Arrington, of TechCrunch is threatening to sue the startup company, Fusion Garage, responsible for the JooJoo. Like all lawsuits that have stemmed from previous partnerships, this has turned into a he said/he said scenario. And it's left to us and a potential judge to decide who's innocent and/or guilty. The JooJoo was initially a project being worked on in collaboration between Michael Arrington, his company TechCrunch and Fusion Garage. Arrington has stated that neither him, his company or Fusion Garage directly own the intellectual property of the JooJoo as it was a collaborative effort between the two companies. Sometime in the beginning of November, Fusion Garage decided to move forward without the help of TechCrunch. Hence, the potential lawsuit. Chandra Rathakrishnan, the CEO of Fusion Garage tells a different story of course. Rathakrishnan stated during the JooJoo's web conference announcement that Fusion Garage funded all of the hardware and software. While Arrington, and TechCrunch provided some assistance, neither provided any financial support to the release of the tablet PC. Fusion Garage is taking a pretty big leap with the release of the JooJoo. While potential lawsuits are always serious, the actual release of the tablet PC itself could pose some problems. Most companies market tablet PC's as cheaper alternatives to notebooks, releasing somewhere between $200-$350. Then of course you have the feature of being smaller, and more mobile than notebooks. Fusion Garage on the other hand looks to be relying on more advanced tech, and a screen considered on the larger end of the tablet PC size spectrum. The JooJoo Tablet PC will release at a $499 price point, which is on par with many notebooks on the market. The JooJoo is special however in that it's screen will be touch enabled. This could have the potential to set the JooJoo in its own niche, or backfire terribly. Many experts believe the $499 price point will be too steep to make any kind of impact in the tablet PC industry, even with touch screen capabilities. eWeek presents an interesting point concerning the release of the JooJoo, which could cause repercussions in the Tablet PC marketplace. With Fusion Garage releasing the JooJoo at $499, Microsoft and Apple might be watching to see how consumers react. Both companies have been rumored to be in development of a tablet pc, with Microsoft working on the 'Courier', and Apple with the iTablet. Only time will tell how big of a push Fusion Garage can make with JooJoo. After making market penetration, the company might then have lawsuits to handle. These aren't exactly the scenarios you want to begin with when releasing your first product onto the market. About the Author: John is a staff writer for WebProNews. |
