11.04.09 The Impending Hybrid Of Tablet PCs And EReaders By John VinsonFor Tablet PC users, it can difficult to describe the benefits of having the device compared to a notebook or in the other direction, a smart phone. Finding a broader market and expanding is the key focus of any business, and is the reason behind what could be the latest trend -- the hybridization of Tablet PCs, and eReaders. The first evidence of this trend comes from the announcement of the Creative Zii MediaBook. What's being touted as a cross between a tablet PC and eReader it leaves one wondering what benefits of each device will be left in, and what will be left out. Creative has announced many of the device's features which sound much like the hybrid idea being talked about. With the Mediabook, users will have access to a touch screen, web browsing is included with direct connections to Twitter and Facebook from the device's display. Along with the web browsing, and touchscreen capabilities, the Mediabook allows for options for media viewing as well. Hence the name. Videos, photos, and music will be available. Memory will be expanded upon using SD cards. The eReader aspects of the device will be found with the various options for content. Newspapers, magazines, and other forms of media will be available with the MediaBook. As of now, there have been no announcement for a release date, or a price. Looking even further into the future, the all but officially announced Apple Tablet PC could provide a unique hybrid opportunity. Apple has always been about releasing products that appeal to a broad market. The idea of an eReader/Tablet PC mix could be such a device to continue their philosophy. There have been loads of rumors circulating that an Apple Tablet PC is currently in the works. The most substantial claim comes from the Wall Street Journal claiming Steve Jobs is personally watching over the production of the Tablet PC. Another bold claim comes from Australia, where there are reports that Apple has been shopping around for content providers. Thus, expanding on the hybrid notion. While the Apple Tablet PC is still in rumor form, the announcement of the Creative Zii MediaBook shows what could be a transition for the industry. What potential effects from this move could provide, remain up in the air. About the Author: John is a staff writer for WebProNews. |
