What's Going On In The World Of Tablet PCs?
By
Chris Crum
Today I just wanted to give kind of a rundown of some interesting Tablet PC-related nuggets circulating in the news.
GottaBeMobile.com is running a little piece about the upcoming 5-year anniversary of Micorosft's Tablet PC. Has it reallly been five years already?
We are rapidly approaching the 5-year anniversary of Microsoft's launch of the Tablet PC. I'm sure the mainstream press is going to be coming out with its own "assessment", but what's really important is what we all think. After all, we are the ones buying them, using using them, using the software built for them, etc.
The market has changed tremendously over the years: introduction of UMPCs, touch, multi-touch via the Surface which will support digital ink, MIDs, we've gone from xp tablet edition to sp2 to Vista which has tablet bits built-in, the disappearance of the hybrid, ISVs entering the space with enthusiasm to leaving after a few years, distributors experiencing much success, continual Apple Tablet PC rumors, some OEMs expanding offerings, other OEMs narrowing offerings, and Dell finally entering after a 5 year absence.
TabletPCReview has posted a lengthy review of the Fujitsu LifeBook U810 complete with a video and numerous screenshots. This is definitely worth checking out if you have some time to go over it. I is also summed up in a short list of pros and cons:
Pros
• Solid design and hinge
• Nice Screen, even though small
• Many ways to navigate including pen, pointing stick and your fingertip
• Nice wireless options including Bluetooth, which comes in handy
• Lightweight portable design
Cons
• Slow start-up
• Passive touchscreen not always responsive to finger or pen
• Only one USB port
• Bottom gets hot when running multiple applications
And finally, in a couple of weeks, the first tablet from Dell will be released after first being announced in May. November 5 is the day. Daily Tech provides some info on the Dell Latitude XT.
